Shea Estates: An Organic Approach to Assisted Living

Shea Estates operates with a simple principle: live-in management who provide and oversee 24/7 assisted living services to a small group of residents that honors and respects their preferences, routines, and habits.

This organic approach is why Shea Estates is home to just five residents. It’s the most relaxed assisted living environment you’ll find, says owner Amy Pantiru.

The Goal: Keep Residents Happy, Safe, and In Charge

With a 5-3 resident and staff ratio, She Estates’ three licensed, fulltime caregivers can really focus on individuals’ desires and interests as well as their care needs. They pay attention to emotional needs alongside traditional caregiver assistance with activities of daily living (ADL) like bathing, toileting, dressing, grooming, transferring, and eating.

Activities tailored to each resident’s functional abilities and interests. “We don’t discriminate against any caregiving need,” Pantiru explains. “We’ve cared for residents in different stages of dementia and decline who prefer the familiarity of home. And we care for higher-functioning residents who we accompany to go shopping or see a movie.”

Dogs and cats that have been properly vaccinated and trained are welcome to join their owners here as well.

Three meals are created each day from scratch using the highest-quality meats and fresh produce (almost always organic) from grocers like Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe’s. You won’t find canned foods here at all. Caregivers pay close attention to dietary needs and required supplements, as well as requests for favorite meals and snacks.

Shea Estates coordinates residents’ medical, dental, and therapy services and provides medication management. Beauty and barbering service delivered onsite.

Staff are licensed to provide Alzheimer’s/memory care and hospice care as well. When space permits, respite and short-term care are also available.

The house is close to three major area hospitals:

  • Mayo Clinic (3 miles away)

  • Honor Health (formerly Scottsdale Healthcare) Shea campus (4 miles away)

  • Honor Health Thompson Peak (4 miles away)

  • Large, Elegant Assisted Living Home With En Suite Rooms

Shea Estates was created to ensure residents are happy and comfortable at home.

In this case, home is a 4500-square foot house featuring spacious bedrooms with private bathrooms. Rooms are decorated with elegant furnishings like four-poster beds, loveseats, artwork, and sitting areas. Many first-time visitors comment on how it doesn’t look like their assumptions about assisted living.

    • All bathrooms are fully accessible and what’s more, very attractive with tiled showers large enough to accommodate in-shower seating.

    • Common rooms include a library/game/media room, dining room, kitchen, and a lovely backyard with patios that double as extra sitting rooms for most of the year.

    • There is wi-fi throughout the property.

    • The entire property is kept meticulously clean, neat, and clutter-free.

    • Each common room is decorated in a different style, sometimes combining two.

    • The kitchen is modern, with stainless steel appliances softened by farmhouse-style kitchen décor.

    • The dining area echoes late Art Deco, while a sitting area adjacent to the TV room features Queen Anne armchairs.

    • A sideboard is filled with Delft-styled pottery.

    • All this space makes it possible to host a lot of parties for residents and their families. Birthdays and holidays are true events, and the Christmas party is the real deal with lots of food (some catered), live music, and a large guest list that includes families, medical staff, other professions who work with us, and of course our residents’ families and friends.

      Affordable Assisted Living Costs

Shea Estates Assisted Living in Scottsdale is surprisingly affordable. Management has contracted with licensed providers to deliver skilled home health services that provide a full range of skills.

It’s a deceptively simple approach to assisted living care—assess residents’ medical and physical needs, and supplement it with an easy living style free from schedules (other than appointments) and unnecessary demands.

Giving residents the flexibility to decide what they want to do, Pantiru concludes, makes a huge difference in achieving a higher quality of life and happiness.
